Shutters or Blinds for a Bay Window? A Leeds Fitter's Honest Take
Bay windows are a feature in so many Leeds homes, from the Victorian terraces of Headingley and Chapel Allerton to the 1930s semis around Roundhay and Horsforth. They let in wonderful light, but they are also the hardest window in the house to dress well. Angles, awkward sills and uneven reveals all conspire against a tidy finish.
We fit both plantation shutters and blinds every week across Leeds, Harrogate, Ilkley and Guiseley, so here is a straight comparison rather than a sales pitch.
Why bay windows are awkward
A bay is really three or five windows meeting at angles, and the walls between them are rarely square. Off-the-shelf blinds leave gaps at the corners, and curtains either block the light or bunch up on the sill. Whatever you choose needs to be made to measure and fitted by someone who has done it before.
Plantation shutters in a bay
Shutters are the classic choice for bays, and for good reason. Each panel is made to the exact size and angle of its section of the bay, so they meet neatly at the corners with no gaps. You get full control of light and privacy, they look as good from the street as from the room, and they add real value when you come to sell.
Made to each angle of the bay, so no light gaps at the corners
Tilt the louvres for privacy while keeping the room bright
No cords, no fabric to fade, and a quick wipe to clean
A permanent fixture that buyers love
The honest downside is cost. Shutters are a bigger investment than blinds, and because they are made to order the lead time is longer. Our standard ranges are usually fitted around three to four weeks after your survey, with a limited express range available within 14 days.
Blinds in a bay
Blinds can work beautifully in a bay when they are measured properly. Roller, roman and venetian blinds all suit bays, and motorised blinds are a particular favourite in bays because you can raise and lower all three or five at once from a remote or your phone, which saves reaching across the sill.
Lower cost and faster to fit
Huge choice of fabrics and colours to match a room
Motorised options for one-touch control across the whole bay
Easy to update if you redecorate
The compromise is the corners. Even well-fitted blinds leave a small gap where they meet, so you will never get the same blackout or privacy as shutters. Fabric blinds also take more looking after in a sunny south-facing bay.
So which should you choose?
If you want a finished, built-in look with maximum privacy and you see this as a long-term improvement to the house, shutters win. If budget or speed matters more, or you like to change the look of a room every few years, blinds are the sensible choice, and motorised blinds make a bay genuinely easy to live with.
Plenty of our customers mix the two, with shutters in the front bay for kerb appeal and blinds elsewhere in the house.
Get it measured properly
Whichever way you go, the single most important thing is accurate measuring. We offer a free home survey across Leeds and the surrounding areas. We measure every angle of the bay, bring samples so you can see them in your own light, and leave you with a written quote on the day. No pressure, no obligation.
